Sleep 😴 & Our Immune System 🦠

We are currently going through a little bit of a pandemic at the moment, where most of us are stealthily trying to dodge the Coronavirus.

One of the ways we can keep that bad energy far away from us is by ensuring we get good quality sleep.

This means being asleep by no later than midnight at the very latest, and getting 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep, every night.

Why?

While you’re blissfully sleeping, your immune system is working super hard at night. It’s searching for any pathogens which shouldn’t be in your body, followed by processing, labelling, quarantining and destroying said pathogen.

The immune system will also have a memory of each pathogen it has been exposed to, so it knows the right attack protocol for it should it come into contact with said pathogen again. Pretty efficient!

And of course, there’s clean up of the aftermath. Sounds like a lot of work, right?

So what happens when you don’t get enough sleep?

These important immune functions become severely compromised, and that’s when the pathogens get the better of you.

A great way to help you get to sleep and improve your immune system at the same time, is by upping your magnesium food intake.

Magnesium is a calmative, so that means it can calm everything from cramps, to veins/arteries, muscles etc.

Magnesium is also an important immune boosting nutrient.

You want to be aiming for at least 500mg or magnesium content from your foods.

You can use apps like Chronometer which calculate your micronutrient intake from your meals, and give you a total breakdown for each day if you want to get a good measure of how much magnesium you’re actually consuming.

If you want to supplement however, you will need to get individualised professional advice as magnesium can interfere with medications, health conditions and other supplements.

The best foods to get magnesium from are:

Dark leafy greens (cruciferous vegetables)
Activated nuts (pre-soaked & roasted)
Activated seeds
Mackerel
Tuna
Salmon
80% sugar free dark chocolate
Hemp seeds
Brown rice
Quinoa
Banana
