Your Food & Your Mood – Part 1

on

I had a request to make a post about foods which can affect your mood – for the better and worse. This is the perfect time to explore this topic, and help get a better understanding of how we can help ourselves.

When it comes to food, mood is affected by several factors. Here are some of the main ones;

  1. Blood sugar levels/balance (literally can’t escape from this topic 😂).

Is your diet predominantly made up of refined carbohydrates, sugars, big heavy meals, sweets, chocolate etc? Every time your send your blood sugar levels to do this rollercoaster of spiking up, and subsequently very quickly crashing down, you are going to be messing up your ENTIRE hormonal balance.

Studies have shown that ppl who suffer schizophrenia and paranoia who avoid sugar and refined carbs completely have a much more stable mood. As soon as they start eating sugar again, the extreme mood swings are back.

Check out my post ‘How Sugary Foods, Stress & Toxins Negatively Affect Digestion’ to understand the negative consequences of constantly messing around with your blood sugar levels (link in bio).

  1. Neurotransmitter function & balance (serotonin, oxytocin, dopamine, endorphins).

Serotonin is dubbed as the happiness hormone. 80% of it is produced in our gut. If your gut is f’ed up, you’re more likely to feel down.

You also need to be eating foods which contain tryptophan, which the body then converts to serotonin & dopamine (the reward hormone). Foods like eggs, turkey, fish + shellfish, chicken, lamb & tofu are great sources (funny that they’re also protein rich 🌚).

Chillis, horseradish, mustard, wasabi, cacao (must be 70%+), vanilla, eggs, citrus, pineapple & banana help your body release endorphins.

Sadly, you can’t eat anything to release oxytocin – but enjoying the way your meal looks, smells & tastes does!

Don’t forget that food is just part of the formula.

Are you getting yourself out in the sunshine? Are you building up a sweat? All these improve levels of happy neurotransmitters.

And definitely, don’t watch the news & check your socials so much! These have been known to throw your dopamine balance off.
