Are you taking a sh*t load of supplements at the same time?

Are you taking a sh*t load of supplements at the same time?

Well there’s a few issues with this:

  1. Interactions.
Supplements, medications, foods, smoking, alcohol and illnesses can all affect each others’ effects.

For example, if you’re taking an iron, magnesium and a zinc supplement at the same time, you’re most likely only going to absorb one of them.

Why? Metals compete for the same biological absorption sites & machinery in the body. If you over do it with magnesium for example, you could give yourself anaemia because you’re not absorbing iron efficiently anymore.

By the way, the same applies if you’re a regular smoker, or you indulge in products which contain heavy metals like mercury or cadmium (these aren’t just in foods, they’re also in medications, beauty products, pollution). They will hijack all those sites intended for good metals like zinc, iron, magnesium, potassium etc, because they fit the lock.
  2. If you’re taking loads of supplements at the same time, how do you know what’s working?

Think about it. How do you isolate the effects of 1 supplement or a multi supplement if you’re taking multiple things at the same time?

Multivitamins from high quality brands are usually fine as their ratios are carefully calculated for the purpose of health maintenance.

This means you don’t get particularly high levels from the nutrients in the multivitamin, you’re just keeping things topped up – very different than going for an a therapeutic dose, which is when you want to correct a health imbalance.

  1. Very nicely written and information. Most people don’t understand nutrient nutrient interaction.

Thank you! Yes, poly pharmacy is very common, just as it is to continue taking the same supplement forever and ever.
