Look, no bullshit, whenever I’m in a place in life where my gut is acting up, and I need it to behave SHARPISH, here’s what I do.
I make a gaddamn soup-er salad. Aka I steam some of my usual salad ingredients like carrots, kale, tomato and chicory, add them into a pot of simmering chicken broth, and dump in a couple tablespoons of cooked quinoa.
I’ll dash in some raw salad ingredients at a he end like avocado slices and a handful of rocket, and I’ll even dress it like a salad. That means, apple cider vinegar, a dash of liquid aminos (msg and gluten free soy sauce), Worcester sauce and last but not least, Tabasco!
I know some of you are reading this and looking at me sideways in your head. Why don’t I just eat a normal salad, you might ask? Well, here’s why:
1. Raw vegetables are much harder to digest than steamed vegetables. They can also cause gas and bloating, particularly if they belong to the cruciferous family. I also like to incorporate the ‘vegetable’ water into my chicken broth for added benefit. So in short, steamed veg is much easier on the gut to digest than raw vegetables, and when your gut is acting up, you don’t want to make things harder on yourself. The consequences can be unpleasant!
2. Slow cooked chicken broth contains an abundance of protective and regenerative amino acids and nutrients which can help heal the gut lining, as well other components like hair, skin and nails. A solid gut lining without perforations can greatly reduce immune dysfunction, so things like hay fever and food sensitivities can improve. The broth can also help reduce inflammation, so it’s really a godsend for those of us with IBS.
Note:If you’re currently dealing with SIBO and/or histamine intolerance, it’s best you don’t go for bone broth as this can worsen your symptoms. However, a slow cooked broth of the meat and ligaments itself
Next time you feel your gut is about to play up and you just don’t have time for it, make yourself a soup-er salad. If you don’t have time to make a chicken broth yourself, there are some really great ready made options you can simply heat up in minutes at home. If you’re based in the UK, I highly recommend Borough Bone Broth. They don’t have any sugar or nasty additives and taste amazing!

Wishing you great gut health, until next time!
