Bloat. Gas. Burps. You eat a piece of pretty much anything, and within hours, you look like you’re in your first or even second trimester. You are either constipated, have diarrhoea, or if you’re really lucky, you have both situations going on at the same time.
You’re eating broccoli, spinach, oats…and it makes things worse. Garlic and onion make you feel like you have a balloon in your belly.
You MAY have an imbalance in bacteria in your gut, otherwise known as Dysbiosis. It usually follows after eating something dodgy, food poisoning, bouts of stress (this includes illness, poor sleep, over exertion, lack of nutrients as well as psychological stress) antibiotic or long term proton pump inhibitor (anti-acid type meds).
What does that mean? A group of opportunistic bacteria are either dominating the bacterial population in your gut, and there aren’t enough good guys there to sort them out. They’re also hijacking your nutrients and energy, and even messing with your mood and cognition, which is completely unacceptable. Time to take action!
The good news is, there are things you can do to help. However, it is advisable you seek professional help from a nutritional therapist, as the reason you got to this stage may very well impact the therapy plan you receive. Generally, a good plan involves improving general health, getting rid of the bad guys, and encouraging the good guys to flourish.
What to do in the meantime:
-Aim to get in 10,000 steps per day.
-Avoid sugar and processed food (This includes soft drinks, diet soft drinks, fruit juice, tinned fruit).
-Avoid ALL artificial sweeteners and honey.
-Eat a variety of real food (you know, not made in a factory).
-Wash your food very well.
-Avoid eating at restaurants or shop bought food for now.
-Drink PLENTY of mineral water throughout the day.
-Go to bed before midnight and aim for 7-8 hours of sleep.
–CHEW YOUR FOOD AND EAT SLOWLY.
-Eat lots of vegetables, cook the majority of them so that they’re easier to digest (less bloat)
-Space your meals 4 hours away from each other.
-Do not snack in between meals.
-Meditate, practice yoga or any type of stress lowering activities.
You definitely should NOT be feeling or looking pregnant…unless you actually are! It is easy once you know what is going on, and what to do about it.
